May Crowning Heading Online for Virtual Students

This year, the Wellington Catholic Virtual School grade 3’s will be celebrating May Crowning with a virtual twist.

A longstanding Catholic tradition, the May Crowning of Mary honors the Virgin Mary. It is typically held where Mary is presented with a floral crown and other handmade items to symbolize her significance in the Church and in our lives.

At May Crowning, students will share their prayers and artwork, as well as crown Mary with flowers virtually,” shared grade 3 teacher, Lauren Webber. “We will also sing songs with actions as singing virtually in unison is very challenging - lag time with so many devices.”

While this is celebrated in schools each year, virtual school teachers had to get creative with hosting it online.

Usually each teaching is responsible for a liturgy/advent/lent celebration each year,” she shared, adding that the other Grade 3 teacher Nicole Furfaro came up with this idea for both classes to celebrate together as the two have worked closely online together attending virtual field trips together and teachers have worked in each class.

Finding togetherness through our screens has been a running theme this year, and teachers such as Webber and Furfaro have gone above and beyond to create this sense of community.

It brings us closer together and know that we are there to support each other,” she said.

For the students, this has been a really fun event to prepare for and one of the great things. One of the great things with remote learning, is that the parents will be able to tune in for the final Crowning!

“Parents can always watch since it is virtual - many students are working in the same room as their parents. Usually at school we would welcome family and friends of presenting classes as well,” she shared.

The Virtual May Crowning for the Grade 3’s will be happening on Monday, May 31.
