Roles and Responsibilities

Student Responsibilities 

During distance learning, students will be required to create habits of success in their home learning environment. Your child’s teacher will help with this and will communicate clear expectations for students. Students, in consultation with their parent(s)/guardian(s), and to the greatest extent possible given their individual circumstances, should: 

  • Establish daily routines for engaging in learning experiences (e.g., following the provided schedule each day) 
  • If possible, identify a comfortable, quiet space in your home where you can work effectively and successfully. 
  • Use information technology and equipment safely following the expectations of Appropriate Use of Information Technologies (GSA.F.3) 
  • Monitor the established lines of communication with your teacher(s), to check for announcements and feedback. 
  • Check your WCDSB email regularly 
  • Do your best work by completing assignments with integrity and academic honesty 
  • Do your best to meet timelines, commitments and due 
  • Communicate proactively with your teacher(s) if you cannot meet deadlines or require additional support. 
  • Adhere to the School Code of Conduct. Failure to comply with expectations may result in temporary removal from certain access to online learning and, in extreme cases, additional consequences. 
  • Comply with the Board’s Policies and Procedures

Parent Guardian Responsibilities 

  • Assist students in maintaining a regular schedule of learning and attending classes daily. 
  • Where possible, create a learning space in the home to support your child’s ability to be attentive to class with minimal disruptions 
  • Ensure your child uses information technology and equipment safely following the expectations of Appropriate Use of Information Technologies (GSA.F.3) 
  • Learning activities will be assigned with careful consideration of grade-level and accommodations that may be required for students. We know parents want to be there to guide their children through distance learning, but students should be able to complete their work with minimal adult support. If you have concerns, please contact your child/teen’s teacher(s). 
  • We ask for your continued support as we navigate uncharted waters and explore innovative ways to engage parents/guardians at home. As always, as a key stakeholder in your child’s development, your engagement with your child can play a crucial role during this time. 
 

Staff Responsibilities 

  • Provide students and parents with clear and consistent schedules 
  • Record Daily attendance 
  • Complete and implement IEPs, providing differentiated support as required 
  • Record all Synchronous full class or group lessons for review 
  • Provide instruction based on the Ontario Curriculum 
  • Include opportunities for guided instruction, large and small group learning, synchronous check-ins and asynchcronous independent work 
  • Provide meaningful, timely feedback to students 
  • Be available to students at all times during their assigned timetables 
  • Consider age and learner profiles when selecting delivery mode, tasks, workload and type of work/week and differentiate when necessary 
  • Consider that students’ home/caregiver support varies 
  • Focus on key concepts and competencies 
  • Design and use a variety of instructional strategies, tasks, and experiences 
  • Work with students and parents/guardians on the delivery of these materials through regular communication 
  • Collaborate with colleagues and administrators to ensure on-going adequate support for students 
  • Use formative assessment to gather evidence of student progress and provide feedback to students/parents on their progress. 
  • Follow the reporting period and complete report cards for all students; grades will be determined using a combination of observations, conversations and evaluation of student products
